Located in Shiroyone town on steep slopes along the seaside, these 1,004 small rice paddies cover an area of 3.8 hectares. The average size for a single rice paddy is about 20 square meters. Shiroyone Senmaida, literally “A Thousand Rice Paddies in Shiroyone”, was selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Terraced Rice Paddies, as well as being nationally designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. In addition, the rice terrace was registered to the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems in June 2011. Senmaida is famous for its scenery, making it a popular spot for landscape photography.
