This mountain has a crater lake called Okama which is also known as the “Five Color Pond” as the pond changes color according to the weather. Mount Zao is a collection of volcanic peaks, which make up the Zao Quasi-National Park. It is recommended to visit during the winter season, as the area is famous for the “snow monsters,” which are alpine trees covered in layers of snow. The mountain offers many hiking trails, and in winter, visitors can look forward to hot springs and ski resorts. To get to the top, you can take the Zao Sanroku Ropeway, located in Zao Onsen, which runs from 8am to 3pm every 15 minutes and costs around 1400 yen.
