Nestled among the Akaishi mountain range, also called the Southern Japan Alps, this mountain is 3,013 meters high. Mount Hijiri, or Hijiri-dake in Japanese, spans across the prefectures Nagano and Shizuoka with its summit close to Tashiro, which is part of Shizuoka City. As the lowest of the 21 mountains in Japan that are over 3,000 meters high, Hijiri is also the most southern peak among them. The trails leading up the mountain are only suitable for advanced hikers and can only be reached by car. The recommended hiking season is from June to November. A hut at the top of the mountain provides sleeping accommodation (bringing a sleeping bag is required) because a roundtrip to the summit and back is not possible in one day.
